FAQs

WHERE SHOULD I FISH?

The best place to fish depends on the day. Watch for favorable weather, surf and wind conditions. Clear, flat water is best. However, LUCK is a major factor. Sometimes the fish just aren't there that day. Please refer to the maps page for recommended spots.

WHEN SHOULD I FISH?

You can't catch a fish without a line in the water. However, mornings and late afternoon/early evenings tend be fairly good times to fish as the wind and surf a usually a bit more forgiving. Also, the midday sun does get quite hot.

WHAT WILL I CATCH?

There's no telling. There are dozens of species that you could catch fishing the shoreline. And everyone has their own opinion of what is a desirable fish to catch. Please refer to our fish page for some examples of fish you are looking for.

WHAT KIND OF ROD SHOULD I USE?

That depends. There are many techniques that are popular and successful for surf fishing in Hawaii. Spinning gear is usually the simplest to use. Fly fishing can be much more difficult. But you are best to use what you are familiar with, and what you know you will enjoy doing.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT SHOULD I USE?

We can't answer that. Your rod will give you that answer. Look for a line that gives you a lure weight range. That is how much weight you should use.

WHAT LINE WEIGHT SHOULD I USE?

Both your rod and reel will tell you what weight line you should use. However, when given the option we usually recommend whatever weight gives you the most yardage.

WHAT IS THE BEST LURE TO USE?

Whatever you feel luckiest with. There are all kinds of fish out there that will respond to various types of lures. The simpler you keep it (soft plastics, simple bait) the more fish will bite, but the lower the quality of the fish. The better the lure, the better the fish, but the fewer bites.

DO YOU HAVE OR CAN YOU RECOMMEND A CHARTER OR GUIDE?

Currently we are not offering guided tours, nor are we in contact with anyone who does. An activities desk or concierge would be able to answer those questions better than we could, especially when it comes to boat charters.

If you are interested in a shoreline spearfishing tour, we do recommend Maui Spearfishing Academy. They can be found online or in the store next to ours.

WHAT ABOUT SPEARFISHING? DO I NEED A SPECIAL PERMIT?

There are no extra rules for spearfishing, except that you are required to have a diver down flag visible at all times. (12"x12" upright on the water.)

I WAS SNORKELING/FISHING/DRIVING TO HANA WHEN I SAW A SILVER/YELLOW/BLUE FISH WITH YELLOW/BLUE/BLACK STRIPES. WHAT KIND OF A FISH WAS IT?

We can say with absolute certainty is was the very rare Wahahee Fish.
